HCM

Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a heart disease that can affect cats, dogs, and humans. In cats, HCM causes the muscular walls of the heart, particularly the left ventricle, to become abnormally thickened. There is currently no cure for HCM, and the condition may be genetic or develop for other reasons.

Once a cat is diagnosed with HCM, it is not always possible to determine exactly why the disease developed. However, when detected early, proper veterinary care and medication may help manage the condition and potentially improve the cat’s quality and length of life.

At PawBuds, we take heart health seriously. Responsible breeding practices include routine cardiac screening of breeding cats by a board-certified veterinary cardiologist to help reduce the risk of producing kittens that may develop HCM.

Genetic testing is also an important screening tool available for Sphynx cats. While genetic testing cannot guarantee that a cat will never develop HCM, it can provide breeders with valuable information when making responsible breeding decisions.

Cats diagnosed with HCM or significant heart abnormalities should not be used for breeding.
